Monrovia, Liberia – In a powerful keynote delivered at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai commemorated Liberia’s 178th Independence Day, urging citizens to embrace national healing and collective progress under the theme: “One People, One Destiny: Healing the Past, Building the Future.”
The President recalled Liberia’s founding and reflected on the country’s remarkable evolution. He spotlighted Liberia’s recent election to a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council as a milestone signaling global confidence in the nation’s leadership.
As part of reconciliation efforts, Boakai honored former presidents William Tolbert Jr. and Samuel Doe during state ceremonies and announced plans for a National Memorial commemorating civil war victims and ECOWAS peacekeepers who helped restore stability in Liberia.
Economic Challenges & Policy Response
President Boakai acknowledged persistent economic hardships, especially high prices for flour, sugar, transportation, and building materials, despite falling import costs. To address this, he announced the creation of a High-Level Presidential Ad Hoc Committee, chaired by Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, tasked with investigating price discrepancies and proposing solutions within 45 days.
In conjunction with these reforms, Boakai announced a National Day of Prayer to be observed on July 30, 2025, inviting all Liberians to seek spiritual guidance and demonstrate national unity.
Vision: “The Liberian Century”
Closing his address, President Boakai called on Liberians to reject divisive politics and old habits of stagnation, inviting the nation to step into what he called “The Liberian Century.” He urged a renewed focus on knowledge, unity, and integrity to rebuild Liberia as a nation worthy of its founding ideals.
